ABSTRACT

—— Teacher competence continues to be an important topic of concern in educational systems across the globe. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between professional development, research literacy and teachers’ competence by determining the predictive nature of the latter two constructs on teachers’ competence. Using a predictive research design, 210 participants were selected using the universal sampling strategy and data analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings of the study showed that the variables had strong correlations with teacher competence, accounted for 76% variance in teacher competence and professional development was the better predictor. The findings provide evidence for the social cognitive theory in which teacher learning experience, behaviors, and environment interact to reinforce teachers’ teaching competence.
