— This qualitative phenomenological study examines how mothers in the City of San Fernando, La Union, experience and cope with the simultaneous challenges of menopause and gouty arthritis, particularly regarding their roles within the family and society. It aims to address the knowledge gap lying in how women are underrepresented and underserved in both studies and clinical trials covering gout, which is even more complicated by the symptoms of menopause that begs for a more nuanced approach in healthcare relative to these. Using purposive sampling, nine participants, all menopausal and clinically diagnosed with gout, were selected. Data was gathered through semi-structured, face-to-face interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis following Colaizzi’s method. Three major themes emerged: (1) embodied struggles, which spans physical limitations, navigating daily life with dual symptoms, and feeling “betrayed” by one’s own body, (2) emotional turbulence and mental load, which entails emotional overload, mental burden, and identity and role conflict, and (3) coping mechanisms and resilience, that encompasses adaptive strategies, use of spirituality, and support systems. Findings highlight that the double transition towards simultaneously living with gout and menopause has led women to deal with the compounded, complicated interplay of struggles from the physical to the psychosocial, and grapple with accessible and affordable interventions. This study may provide valuable insights for enhancing patient-centered care, promoting public health awareness, and recognizing the nuances of gender-specific experiences in future scholarly works.
